Facing Death and Choosing Escape

It has recently been reported that the Chinese authorities are forcibly repatriating large numbers of North Korean defectors who have been detained for years.
This tragic news reminds us once again how desperate and dangerous their situation is.

The North Korean authorities regard those who have crossed the border as “traitors” and subject them to brutal punishment.
Those who are caught face torture, imprisonment in political prison camps, or even execution.

As of 2023, approximately 2,600 defectors are detained in Chinese detention centers, awaiting repatriation.
Their lives are in constant danger.
We at NKHR are making every effort to rescue as many as possible before it is too late.

We ask for your continued attention and support to protect the lives and human rights of those who risked everything to seek freedom.

A Story of a North Korean Defector Rescued with Your Help

A woman in her 40s, Ms. P

“I escaped from North Korea in the early 2000s and lived in China for more than 20 years.
During that time, I worked on farms and in restaurants, always living in fear of being caught.
Once, I was caught by the police and barely escaped deportation.
Every day was a struggle just to survive.

But I never gave up hope that one day I could live freely.
Through the help of NKHR and kind supporters, I finally arrived in South Korea this year.
When I first stepped on South Korean soil, I cried uncontrollably.
I still can’t believe that I can now live as a free human being.

Thank you to everyone who helped me.
I will live the rest of my life with gratitude and do my best to help others in need.”

**“Even for just one day, I want to live like a human being.”

Please help North Korean defectors make that wish come true.**

Your support gives them life and freedom.
Please join us so that more people can live without fear and with dignity.
